Welcome to RDA Jersey

The Autumn term is now in full flow -

although we have had quite a wet start, most of our rides have taken place.

We have been celebrating 50 years of RDA National in the UK.

The Jersey RDA Group is a member of the Association of Jersey Charities as well as being affiliated to the RDA National as a member group. For more than 40 years, Riding for the Disabled has been delivering opportunities for therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities. Founded as a National organization in 1969, RDA now has over 500 Member Groups across the UK.

Jersey RDA operate from Le Claire Stables in St John

Monday to Friday afternoons during school terms.

For times and instructors see our “about us” section.

Important Notice - at present, there is a weight restriction for any potential rider. Fully clothed, a rider cannot weigh more than 10 stone.

In Jersey, we do not charge for our rides.

Financially we are independent and rely on donations and

fundraising in Jersey. We are all unpaid volunteers

and there are virtually no administration costs so

money raised in Jersey is fully used to benefit

Jersey riders.

What does Riding for the Disabled do?

Our principal objective is to provide to both adults and children with physical disabilities and learning difficulties, the opportunity to ride to benefit their health and wellbeing at the level of their ability, choice and ambition.

In the year ending March 2018 we gave nearly 800 rides to about 65 riders, they range in age from 3 upwards.

We have recently been able to send some young riders and their carers to the Calvert Trust Exmoor stables for a few days holiday. As well as regular riding, horse based activities include carriage driving (which can also be done from a wheelchair), horse behaviour, ‘learning to speak horse’ sessions and tandem riding. Sending our riders to this wonderful activity centre has been a great success and (if funds allow) we hope to continue to give some of our riders this experience.

What are the benefits?

Jersey RDA gives individuals the opportunity to:

· Reach therapeutic goals: improve muscle tone and posture

· Achieve their personal ambitions: sit on a horse for the first time, learn new skills

· Combat social isolation: build relationships, enjoy events, develop self-confidence

· Develop life skills: improve communication, take responsibility, be a team player

· Experience the outdoors: ride in the countryside

· Connect with animals: bringing optimism and adding a new element to life
